Jacqueline's paper is an investigation into the media's role in the Rodney King beating and subsequent trial and riots. She did an excellent job integrating sources as she set the social, economic, historical, and cultural context in which the riots took place. Jacqueline then details and analyzes how the media’s coverage of the case – showing partial video clips and using racial language fueled the anger of citizens who were already being pushed toward the margins of society. Her paper shows how the actions of the news media have a major impact on society. Comments from Dr. Sargeant's support letter: “Jackie is without question, one of our finest undergraduate students.... It was, quite simply, the best undergraduate paper I have read in more than six years of university teaching.... As you can see from her final paper, Jackie makes extensive analytical use of her sources to construct her paper. She contextualizes her original research by referencing the work of other authors effectively. She uses unusually well-chosen sources to construct a persuasive and original argument that makes a real contribution to our understanding of a traumatic moment in United States history."
