Pollak Library Research How Do I... Print Info
How do I browse for books by broad topic?

This page describes how to use the Library of Congress Classification system (call numbers) to locate the section of the library where books on particular subjects are shelved.

1.
Look up your broad topic in the Library of Congress Classification Outline.
  Example:
Click on B-- Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
Click on Subclass BF Psychology
Scroll down to BF 712-724.85 Developmental Psychology to find the call number and range of numbers covering the topic 'developmental psychology'.

2.
Another method is to search the Library Catalog by subject. When you get a list of results, click on the Extended Display button.
Clicking Extended Display causes the call numbers of the books to display, allowing you to see which call number locations would be the best places to browse for books.
