Library Faculty Scholarly Pursuits

Pollak Library faculty and staff professional activities during the past year promoted scholarship and service to the campus community.

Cynthia Bruns, Reference Coordinator/Librarian, has been named American Studies Editor for Resources for College Libraries (RCL). The updated Resources for College Libraries database, with the newly created American Studies section, is due to be released in November 2007.

Anh Huynh-Nelson, Head of Circulation Services, received a grant from the CSUF Staff Development Program to develop best practices in Circulation services and inter-campus communication. Anh visited 13 CSU campuses, traveling as far north as CSU Chico to conduct the study. Staff members find that the core competencies program Anh developed under the grant have improved internal communication. Anh is now exploring potential changes and improvements in the following areas: library security, study room checkout procedures, and accepting food donations for the homeless in lieu of library fines.

Joy Lambert, Assistant Librarian, reviewed The NextGen Librarian’s Survival Guide by Rachel Singer Gordon in Serials Review 33 (1), March 2007.

Barbarly McConnell, Reference and Instruction/Science Librarian, received an M.A. in English from Cal State Fullerton in May 2007. Barbie's Masters project, "The Image of the Library in Eighteenth-Century English Literature," received honors from the English Department. She will continue to pursue this topic with the goal of expanding the project into a book. Barbie has also been working with Jeff Kuo of the Cal State Fullerton Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on a report titled "Clearinghouse of Technological Options for Reducing Anthropogenic Non-CO2 GHG Emissions from All Sectors." The report, submitted in summer 2007, was the result of a grant from the California Air Resources Board to summarize available information on technological options for reducing anthropogenic non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. As co-principal investigator for this project, Barbie was involved in guiding the research team in their literature search and served as technical editor for the report.

Jie Tian, Associate Librarian, and Matt Mallard, Reference & Instruction Librarian, received the 2006-2007 Carnegie-Whitney Award given by the American Library Association Publishing Committee based on their proposal, “A Century of Peace Making.” They will be researching and writing an annotated bibliography with the goal of expanding its scope into a book.

Jie Tian, Associate Librarian, participated in the CSUF-Fudan Seminar and Cultural Tour in May 2007. The CSUF faculty/staff delegation visited Fudan University and Shanghai University in Shanghai and attended lectures on higher education in China, the Chinese economy, and the social and cultural history of Shanghai. On June 1, 2007, Jie gave a lecture/reading titled “Poetry and the World: A Reading and Interpretation of Poets in America” at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
